The Women’s Cypher is a concept that Magamba Networks creative hub Moto Republik created in an effort to create an equal opportunity for women hip hop artists to perfect their craft. The cypher brings together women rappers who are in the early stages of their careers and trains them with the necessary skills to help them establish themselves as professionals in the industry, and equips them with material such as professional photoshoots to form a part of their profiles. At the end of the training the women collaborate on a song and video that is showcased on all of Magamba’s social media platforms, that they can use for their personal profiles. To date, the cypher has taken place in Bulawayo, Mutare and Harare with artists from those respective areas. This year the cypher will take place in Harare and will feature women hip hop artists from Mary Jane and Lisa Alfonso (Zimbabwe), Dj Lady Light (Zambia) and TMRS AwaGe (Mozambique). In line with Shoko Festival’s theme of increasing participation, the women’s cypher this year would like to showcase the immense talent all women and young girls have in Zimbabwe in all creative disciplines. The cypher will feature Harare based poet Banshee, 2 female dancers Vanessa from Harare and lastly an all female band.
The performance will be taking place at the ZGS/GZH 51 Lawson Avenue Milton Park, in The Pavillion, which was designed and built by women. This year the women’s cypher is a celebration of what magic happens when women come together and create.
