Das kollektive New voices- Takudzwa Mafinyani

by ZGS / Goethe Zentrum

Under our Das Kollektiv project, we ran an open call for the “New Voices Grant”. Open to
Creatives (Individuals), Hubs/ Creative enterprises/organizations, and Festivals.
We are delighted to announce Takudzwa Mafinyani as one of the Das Kollektiv New Voices
Grantees.
Takudzwa Mafinyani or “Maf” was born in May 1996, on a Tuesday. From 2009 – 2014 he
attended Prince Edward School. He later enrolled in Near East University in February 2016 and
graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations in January 2020. During his
enrolment at Near East University, he developed a hobby of making “skits” which turned into an
interest. Coming across movies of his role model – Director Christopher Nolan gave him the
edge to take his skits even further by adding cinematic and well-told elements into them. By the
time he graduated, he decided to write, act in and edit short films that had “nod-frowny”
cinematography, well-written storylines, and a silly/unusual topic to dramatize. He believes all of
his experiences – bad & good have played a huge role in him creating the script for The
Protectors.
The Protectors is a short film based on a trio of superheroes, namely: “Vasectomy”, “Doctor
Pull-Out”, & “Birth Control”, who have taken it upon themselves to save the people of Zimbabwe
by protecting them from having unprotected sex! Under the guidance of their Artificially
Intelligent Ho lographic Assistant “Professor Do-Rex”, the number of targets to save may be
mountainous, but their saving is done more efficiently.
Below the surface, the film is an awareness campaign. It encourages the importance of safe sex
and how the consequences are unpleasant. The film is also a visual metaphor for how one
tends to have a moment of weakness and decides not to use condoms; fortunately, we have
The Protectors to save us.
