Pop Up Small Grants Open call Winner – Thando Ncube

by ZGS / Goethe Zentrum

The ZGS/GZH was running an Open Call for Creatives (Individuals), Hubs/ Creative enterprises/organisations, and Festivals.

We are delighted to announce Thandolwenkosi Ncube, as one of our Pop Up Small Grants Open call Winners.

Care Clowns Zimbabwe offers humour as a means of psychological support in orphanages, children’s homes, and underprivileged primary schools around Matabeleland. We volunteer to entertain children through interactive and inclusive clown performances. We offer free-themed clown performance shows to help children create good memories, relieve stress and tensions and bring laughter, joy, comfort, appreciation, and to know they are loved and cared for. Our primary purpose as artists is to maintain humanity and install unity within these communities.

Happy Souls, a project curated by Care Clowns Zimbabwe, will be implemented in Bulawayo, Umguza Rural District, from August to November 2024. It will include clown workshops facilitated by team leader Thandolwenkosi Ndlovu who recently concluded a tour of Zimbabwe with Clowns without Borders USA, and clown performances in 3 orphanages and 3 children’s homes. Beyond the entertainment value, the aim of the project is to facilitate healing and provide psychological support to children, with clown playmaking as a conduit. The clown team is composed of 6 performers drawn from Bulawayo and Filabusi, 3 of which have received professional clown training from the Zimbabwe Theatre Academy through the actor-creator program. As expressed by Ms Thando, the team and the project reflect a desire to serve the most vulnerable through the spreading of love, laughter and cheer.
